PUT THE OFFERS SIDE BY SIDE

How to negotiate a car price.

Start with a clear vehicle specification and a written comparison. The objective is an offer you understand and are willing to accept, not a discount number detached from the rest of the transaction.

1. Define the vehicle you will actually buy

Write down the year or year range, trim, required options and acceptable alternatives. For a used vehicle, record mileage, condition and history. Two offers are useful comparables only when those differences are accounted for.

2. Establish the current asking-price range

Compare matching inventory and note when each listing was checked. A vehicle that is not available, requires travel you cannot make or includes equipment you do not want is a reference point rather than an interchangeable deal. Use research tools to build your shortlist.

3. Separate the dealer discount from rebates

Ask the dealer to identify its own price reduction and list manufacturer programs separately. A loyalty rebate for which you are ineligible should not be treated as a discount you can receive. Check the incentives directory, then have the dealer confirm the program and its conditions in writing.

4. Make a specific, comparable request

Ask for the exact stock number, selling price and itemized final total. Tell each dealer the same location, purchase method and vehicle specification. Request a breakdown when an answer only quotes a monthly payment.

5. Keep the trade-in and financing visible

Once the car price is clear, compare the trade-in allowance, existing loan payoff and financing proposal separately. A useful offer should show how those parts connect. The financing and trade-in guide walks through that comparison.

6. Decide on the complete offer

Set your acceptance criteria before the final conversation: vehicle specification, overall cost, timing and any remaining conditions. If an acceptable combination is not available, decide whether to wait or change the specification. SHFTR reviews availability, market trends and applicable programs when recommending a purchase timeline.

Before signing, use the dealer quote checklist to reconcile the written offer with the contract. A single result such as Justin’s HUMMER EV discount demonstrates one completed deal, not a target that applies to every vehicle.
